                                                                                Dream Destination

Every year since I was very young my family and I have traveled to Chatham in Cape Cod for vacation. It only takes around two hours to get there, and one half tank of gas from my home town of Middleton. The ride there feels like it takes forever because my sisters and I cannot wait to hangout by the beach. During the car ride you see the most perfect scenery. Driving over the Sagamore Bridge is especially awesome because the Cape Cod Canal below you is beautiful.

Once in Chatham, we stay in a cottage that is about a mile from the beach. It is a three bedroom cottage with a full kitchen, living room, den and dining room. It is not the most modern place but it is pretty spacious for our family of five. We are less than 1 mile from the local beach and there are about another thirty beaches all within a thirty minute car ride. Some of the beaches are calm and warm. Others are cooler but have huge waves for surfing and playing in the water. The side of the coast you are on will determine the water conditions. At a few of the beaches I have visited I have seen dolphins and even sharks.
One of my family’s favorite beaches to visit is called Cahoon Hollow. The beach is located in Wellfleet and has a great restaurant right on the beach. The Beachcomber is the restaurant and is has both indoor and outdoor dining. It is set at the edge of a cliff overlooking Cahoon Hollow beach. The food is great and every night there is live music. To get down to the beach you need to climb down a 50 foot cliff, no wooden stairs or anything, just a path of hardened sand. It is extremely difficult carrying your beach chairs, coolers, and beach toys down the sand dunes, but well worth the trip.

Another one of our favorite spots on this trip is the drive-in movie theater. I love it because it is so different from the hot and dark cinemas around here. At the drive-in we pick a perfect night for weather and everyone spreads out near their cars with chairs. What makes the event even better is the snack bar just a few feet away!
One of the most entertaining places to visit while you are in Cape Cod is Provincetown. If you want to go sight- seeing, Provincetown is the place to go. Here you will find specialty shops, restaurants, nightclubs and of course the beach. During the day it is pretty much kid friendly but at night it is definitely “R” or “X” rated.

If you ever get a chance I would definitely go to Chatham on Cape Cod. It is a beautiful place with so much to do!

  1. Rachel, I loved your dream vacation spot because it’s my home town! I love the drive ins too, all of my friends pick a date and we all bring our cars and go to hang out. Chatham is one of my favorite spots to go because it’s so laid back and fun to do some shopping or just chill and walk down the streets. If you haven’t done it yet I suggest that you should go to Province Town on the 4th of July. It is so much fun and all college kids and high schoolers go there to hang out. The streets are packed and everyone is so nice, maybe because they are intoxicated. Make sure to bring Rich and we can meet up next time you come down. I’ll show you some cool beaches that only locals know about.

  2. Rach I loved this post! I used to live on the Cape in Falmouth until I was five. I'll still visit in the summer and walk the Cannal or visit Province Town or even just to go to the beach for the day. I've never been to Chattham but one of my friends has a summer house there and loves it! After reading your post i'll definitely have to pay it a visit!

  3. Rachel, I loved this blog post. I've never been to Cape Cod and I would love to go one day. Hopefully I'll be able to go this summer. My friends go all the time and absolutely love it there. They always tell me about Provincetown and how it really is R rated at night. It seems like you and your family have a lot of fun there! For you, it is also easier to get to. For me, it would take about four hours, but it seems like it would be a worth while trip!
